This is a page dedicated to all those who inspired, or made an important contribution to, the MCB Carnival.

Inspiration

Orac, of Respectful Insolence fame.

In a sense, he really is my ‘blog dad’, because I pretty much refused to even try starting a blog until I started reading his blog. I thought that blogging was a waste of time, something you do to moan about your personal life to millions of faceless people – and I did not want to do that. And although there is much blogging of this kind, reading Respectful Insolence showed me that blogging could be used for other aims.

I learned that blog posts can be as informative as, and useful, as essays, when the blogger really wants to contribute to discussions of important subjects, or simply inform his audience and spread knowledge – especially about usually exploited and misunderstood subjects; I learned that, in high-quality blogs, sometimes the commenters will be able to contribute as much as the blogger; and I learned that blogging could be used to learn, talk, and discuss about science, and possibly help start a wider discourse on the role of science in our culture, life, and shared future.

I also had no idea about what “blog carnivals” were, and what they were all about, and I learned much simply by first following, then writing for, and finally hosting for the Skeptics’ Circle.

Orac’s cogent posts are always a source of inspiration, and his writing style – able to be cutting, while still remaining respectful – is really something I wish we’d see more around the science blogosphere.

Exceptional contribution

You could be here…get involved, host the carnival, and become a regular submitter of high-quality posts to get started!
